It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (1.06.14)

IMWAYR

This weekly post comes from Jen at Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee and Ricki at Unleashing Readers.  It's a great source to find new books to use with your students.

Since it's been winter break, I've had waaaay more time to read.  Here are some of my favorites from this past week.

Something to Prove: The Great Satchel Paige Vs. Rookie Joe Dimaggio (Carolrhoda Picture Books)
Something to Prove:  The Great Satchel Paige vs. Rookie Joe Dimaggio by Robert Skead
5/5 stars
Amazing informational text.
Recommended 3rd grade and up

Who Says Women Can't Be Doctors?: The Story of Elizabeth Blackwell
Who Says Women Can't Be Doctors?  The Story of Elizabeth Blackwell by Tanya Lee Stone
4/5 stars
Another good informational text that shows how strong American women are.

The Tree Lady: The True Story of How One Tree-Loving Woman Changed a City Forever
The Tree Lady by H. Joseph Hopkins
4/5 stars
More strong American women - story of Kate Sessions and how she changed San Diego's Balboa Park.  The strength of this book is in the illustrations.

The Great American Dust Bowl
The Great American Dust Bowl by Don Brown
4/5
Loved the graphic novel format to retell the story of the "Dirty 30s".

Please Bring Balloons
Please Bring Balloons by Lindsay Ward
5/5 stars
Fantastic picture book.  Loved the story, loved the illustrations.  Could reread many times.

The Misadventures of Salem Hyde: Spelling Trouble (The Misadventures of Salem Hyde, #1)
The Misadventures of Salem Hyde:  Book One:  Spelling Trouble by Frank Cammuso
4/5 stars
Fun new graphic novel series from the author of The Knights of the Lunch Table series (which is another good one to check out).  Salem is young witch and a cat is sent to help her manage her "talent".

The Cloak Society
The Cloak Society by Jeramey Kraatz
5/5 stars
Love this new series.  It's fast, adventurous, dangerous, and thrilling all in one!  I love that the main character is part of the "villain" society... or is he?  Already ordered the second one in this series!

Continuing to read this week:

Super (Supers of Noble's Green, #2)     Marty McGuire     The Sasquatch Escape

And one for myself:

The Valley of Amazement

What are you reading???
